Social Studies Question?

Please help- Between the two world wars, the free nations of the world followed a policy of appeasement toward Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and the military leaders of Japan. They gave in to the demands of these leaders in order to prevent a war. Was appeasing these leaders a wise decision on the part of the free world why or why not?
